Interior Detailing 101: What's Actually Included?

When most people hear "interior detail," they picture a vacuum and maybe a wipe-down of the dashboard. But a professional interior detail is dramatically more comprehensive than what any quick car wash or DIY effort delivers. It is a systematic, surface-by-surface deep cleaning and restoration of every interior component in your vehicle.

Seats

Seats are the centerpiece of any interior detail, and the process varies based on material.

Leather seats receive a multi-step treatment. First, we vacuum the seats and use compressed air to blow debris out of seams, stitching channels, and bolster creases. Then we apply a pH-balanced leather cleaner with a soft brush, working it into the leather grain to lift embedded dirt, body oils, and skin cells that accumulate from daily use. The cleaner is wiped away with clean microfiber towels, and we follow with a premium leather conditioner that restores moisture, suppleness, and UV protection to the hide.

On neglected leather, the difference between the first seat we clean and the uncleaned seats is immediately visible — a shade or more of color difference is common, especially on lighter leathers. That darkness is accumulated body oil and dirt that has been ground into the leather over months or years.

Fabric and cloth seats receive vacuuming followed by hot water extraction. Our extractor injects hot cleaning solution deep into the fabric fibers and immediately suctions it back out along with dissolved dirt, stains, and contaminants. For stubborn stains — coffee, food, ink, dye transfer — we pre-treat with appropriate spot treatments before extraction. Multiple passes ensure the deepest clean possible.

Alcantara and suede seats or inserts require specialized products and techniques. Standard leather or fabric cleaners can damage these materials. We use Alcantara-specific cleaners applied with gentle dabbing and brushing motions that lift dirt without matting or discoloring the material.

Carpets and Floor Mats

Floor surfaces take more abuse than any other interior component. Feet track in dirt, mud, sand, salt, food crumbs, and liquids with every entry.

Carpet cleaning starts with thorough vacuuming using a crevice tool to reach under seats, into seat track channels, and along the edges where carpet meets trim panels. After vacuuming, heavily soiled carpets receive hot water extraction. For Atlanta vehicles specifically, we frequently see Georgia red clay staining in carpet fibers, especially in the driver's footwell and rear passenger areas. Red clay requires dedicated treatment beyond standard extraction.

Floor mats — whether rubber, carpet, or all-weather — are removed from the vehicle and cleaned separately. Rubber mats are scrubbed, rinsed, and dressed. Carpet mats are vacuumed and extracted. Cleaning mats outside the vehicle allows us to also clean the carpet surface underneath, where debris inevitably migrates.

Trunk and cargo area carpet receives the same vacuum and extraction treatment as the main cabin. This area is often neglected in basic cleaning but can harbor spills, pet hair, grocery residue, and musty smells from trapped moisture.

Dashboard and Center Console

The dashboard and center console are high-visibility surfaces that collect dust, fingerprints, and UV damage.

Dashboard cleaning involves wiping down all surfaces with an appropriate cleaner — we use different products for different materials. Soft-touch dashboards require gentle, non-abrasive cleaners. Hard plastic surfaces can handle slightly more aggressive cleaning. After cleaning, we apply a UV-protectant dressing that restores a factory-fresh appearance and shields against sun damage through the windshield.

We avoid the heavy, greasy dressings that leave dashboards unnaturally shiny and attract dust like a magnet. Our products leave a clean, matte or satin finish that looks factory-original and does not create windshield glare.

Center console surfaces — armrest, cup holders, storage compartments, shifter, buttons, and knobs — are cleaned individually. Cup holders are notorious for sticky residue from drinks, and we use detailing brushes and precision tools to clean every groove and gap. The center armrest, which absorbs skin oils and wear, is cleaned and conditioned or dressed based on material.

Air Vents

Air vents are one of the most overlooked areas in interior cleaning, and they are also one of the biggest contributors to interior odor and dust distribution.

Every time your HVAC system runs, it pushes air through vents that may be lined with accumulated dust, pollen, and debris. This means every vent is actively redistributing contaminants into your cabin air.

We clean each individual vent louver with specialized vent brushes and compressed air. On vehicles with heavily soiled vents, we remove what we can and use detailing swabs to reach into the vent housing. The difference in air quality after vent cleaning is noticeable, especially for allergy sufferers during Atlanta's intense pollen season.

Door Panels

Door panels include multiple materials and surfaces in a compact area — typically a combination of leather or fabric inserts, hard plastic frames, window switches, speaker grilles, map pockets, and door handles.

Each material receives appropriate treatment. Leather inserts are cleaned and conditioned. Plastic surfaces are cleaned and dressed. Speaker grilles are brushed free of dust. Map pockets are vacuumed and wiped. Window switch panels — which collect skin oils and grime from daily use — are detailed with brushes and cleaner.

The door jambs (the painted metal surfaces visible when doors are open) are also cleaned during a thorough interior detail. These areas accumulate road grime, grease, and debris that transfers to clothing when entering and exiting the vehicle.

Headliner

The headliner — the fabric-covered ceiling of your vehicle — is a surface most people never think about cleaning, but it collects smoke, cooking odors, off-gassing chemicals, and transferred contaminants over time.

Headliner cleaning requires careful technique because the fabric is adhered to a foam backing that can separate if over-wetted or scrubbed too aggressively. We use a light misting of fabric cleaner and gentle dabbing or brush work to lift stains and soiling. For localized stains (common around sunroof openings and grab handles), we target-treat those areas specifically.

On vehicles exposed to cigarette smoke or heavy cooking odors, the headliner often holds the most concentrated odor. Professional cleaning of this surface is essential for effective odor removal.

Windows and Glass

Interior glass cleaning is the final step that frames the entire interior detail. Clean glass makes the entire cabin feel clearer, brighter, and newer.

We clean all interior glass surfaces with a streak-free glass cleaner and clean microfiber towels. The windshield interior is the most critical surface — it develops a film over time from off-gassing of interior plastics, which creates a haze that is most visible when driving into the sun. A properly cleaned interior windshield transforms forward visibility, especially during sunrise and sunset commutes on Atlanta's east-west highways.

Rear windows, side windows, and mirrors are cleaned to the same standard. For vehicles with tinted windows, we use ammonia-free cleaners that are safe for window film.

What to Expect: The Transformation

A complete interior detail on a moderately used vehicle typically takes 2-3 hours. Heavily soiled vehicles, vehicles with pet contamination, or vehicles requiring multiple extraction passes may take longer.
